‘one garden every mile’

Our Mission

Our mission is to cultivate an organization of community members to grow our own organic crops. Through growing our food we work toward sustainable community empowerment and health: creating meaningful work, building lasting skills and developing strong relationships within the region.

Our Vision

One day Huerta del Valle will build ‘one garden every mile’ in the Inland Empire by teaching the next generation of organic farmers, empowering communities to manage their own collective gardens, and creating a food system that compensates farmers equitably and addresses complex regional health issues.

Our Methods

  • Create and operate community gardens and urban farms

  • Provide access to affordable "beyond organic" produce for all to access locally through open markets at our sites

  • Teach community about ecology, sustainability, and nutrition through agricultural education programs

  • Localize our food system through increasing urban agriculture, especially through new farmer training and land access in incubation

  • Create agricultural careers and leadership opportunities for adults and youth

  • Develop replicable local practices for economic and environmental justice

Our Values

Respect

The cornerstone of all our accomplishments: respect for leadership, respect for one another, and respect for our community. We practice respect through good communication; we listen patiently, with open minds and open hearts, and we speak openly and calmly, even when we disagree.

Justice

An integral part of the universal human rights struggle. Food Justice means that all people have the right to grow, sell, and eat fresh, nutritious, healthy, affordable, culturally appropriate food. Food Justice means that the cultivation and distribution of food should never come at the expense of the well-being of workers, animals, or the land.

Support

Caring for one another physically, emotionally, and spiritually. This means offering help, working together, and sharing resources when we can. It also means sharing our thoughts, feelings, and experiences, so we may learn from one another, spread inspiration, and strengthen the relationships that allow us to prosper.

Responsibility

We are Responsible for ensuring that we all follow and practice these values every day. We are responsible for taking the time and making the effort to show respect and care for one another. We are responsible for maintaining the land we grow on, and the fight for justice that our crop represents.
